For the Record
“What the hell are you thinking making this proposal, Draco?” Clarence shouted, the vein in his forehead bulging and pulsing with alarming force. “You know damn well that we’ll never make a profit, much less break even, on that – that Death Eater’s manuscript!”
Clarence had always been an ugly man, and spiteful, too—Draco had seen a picture of him as a boy, his face red and his orange hair a veritable mop on top of his lumpy head, elbowing a younger, cuter sibling out of the frame. Draco ran his hand through his long hair and sighed. “You don’t understand, sir. It’s not always about making a profit –”
“Bloody hell, Draco, this is a business! I would think that you, of all people, would understand the importance of turning a profit. And our reputation! The public’s opinion of our publishing house is not something that I will allow you to drag through the mud with this trash!” He threw Draco’s carefully worded proposal and Severus’ sample chapters across the desk with such force that they hit Draco in the chest.
“Sir –”
“You’ve never tried pulling something like this before, or allowed your past to affect your job in such a transparent manner. Frankly, I’m disappointed, and I don’t want to hear another word about this again. If you want to keep your job, that is.”
Draco swallowed hard. “Yes, sir. I apologize for –”
“Just don’t do it again!” he bellowed. “Wasting time on this tripe is not something I, or my superiors, appreciate.”
Draco nodded and grabbed his papers before fleeing the conference room, disappointed and not looking forward to explaining to Severus what had happened with his manuscript.
